Project 86 Wakefield Park

Last Saturday saw us bring the racefix project 86 back out to another Trackschool Trackday at Wakefield Park for another round of testing in near “stockish” form but mostly acting as another familiarisation session for me to get comfortable in the car. This was the 4th trackday in the car in just over 3 weeks which just proves how reliable and fun this chassis really is.

I ended up taking 8 tenths out of my previous best, landing on a 1:12.6 using the help from Boz, Timmy Brook and of course our friend Johnny Law forever reminding me to be patient on the throttle. Still a couple seconds off the goal of a sub 10 but not bad for a near-stock “slow” 86.

I’m very quickly getting used to the way the car moves around under me and how to get that working to my advantage. I found that you could get the nose turned in under brakes (classic trail braking that i’m still learning to do well if i’m honest) and then use the playfulness of the rear to let it rotate and steer it out with the throttle. Throwing a couple of clicks towards the firm side in the MCA blues proved quite beneficial in helping tune out some more understeer.

We’ve got about a month off now till the next Trackschool Trackday on the 18th of January. In this time we’ll be doing a full flush of all fluids in the car (the car was serviced by a very reputable workshop 1000kms before we purchased it which is why it’s only getting done now. We’ve changed the oil twice now in our 2 month ownership), braided brake lines, a new set of rotors (unsure of what type but likely something 2 piece), some new tyres to replace the tired goodrides, some brake ducting and we might even get around to fitting our bucket seat in the car! All of this of course will be covered right here on
